My celebrity interviews at TIFF16

In another post, I pasted in my 12 daily vlogs from TIFF16. Here, I’ll paste in the full interviews I did with celebrities at the Toronto International Film Festival 2016. In some of them the crowd noise is really loud, because I didn’t have a microphone for my camcorder. But I sure wasn’t expecting to be on the red carpet doing interviews! It all happened because of a TV host I met on Instagram during the festival (see the vlogs). So it was quite exciting to meet these celebs, and I hope this leads to a future as a celebrity interviewer. I promise I’ll have a microphone next time!

In September, Get Reel Movies sent me to the press screening of Personal Shopper, starring Kristen Stewart. Then, as you saw in my vlog, at TIFF I interviewed the director Olivier Assayas in a hotel room with 3 other reporters. I wasn’t allowed to film it. But I recorded the audio. Here’s an edit of my 3 questions.

When I interviewed Hollywood super-producer Gary Goetzman, who founded Playtone with Tom Hanks, about his Justin Timberlake documentary, Gary said he wants to make a doc about me next, because he finds me fascinating.

In my interview with actor Adrian Hough, you’ll learn he’s both tough enough to do motion capture in an Assassin’s Creed video game, and sweet enough to take his mom to the TIFF premiere of his movie The Assignment (2017).

Actor Maxwell Jenkins just played Gerard Butler‘s son in The Headhunter’s Calling, is now shooting a role as Robert DeNiro‘s grandson in The War with Grandpa, and stars in the upcoming Netflix reboot of Lost in Space. But in my interview with him at TIFF, I learned that it’s his sister Samantha who he thinks is “the best thing ever”. (Bonus interview: I scored the first interview ever with Samantha!)

I discovered that Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones doesn’t seem to know that Mexicans speak Spanish.

At the premiere of Dog Eat Dog Movie, screenwriter Matthew David Wilder and I came up with an even, um, wilder script. Crazy things happen at Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Paul Schrader wrote classics like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. At Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival, he revealed to me that Dog Eat Dog Movie isn’t one of those.

In The Edge of Seventeen, Hayden Szeto may or may not get the girl (Hailee Steinfeld). But he for sure will get a frame to put my cartoon of him in.

Haley Lu Richardson may be the popular girl in the current #1 movie Split. But on the TIFF red carpet for The Edge of Seventeen, I learned that my cartoon of her as a popular girl was “not true”.

Blake Jenner may play a stud in The Edge of Seventeen and in real life be married to Supergirl on The CW‘s Melissa Benoist, but on the TIFF red carpet I showed him a cartoon I drew of him, and I learned that in high school he was off making YouTube videos with the drama kids.

Kelly Fremon Craig may be the glamorous writer/director/co-producer of The Edge of Seventeen, but at the TIFF premiere I showed her a cartoon I drew of her and learned the real inner her.

James L. Brooks created the Mary Tyler Moore Show. But at the TIFF premiere of The Edge of Seventeen, I showed him a cartoon I drew of him and I learned that he got beat up in high school.

Hailee Steinfeld may be an Oscar-nominated actress, model and singer. But on the TIFF red carpet for The Edge of Seventeen, she was clearly impressed with my cartoon of her.

The stars of Sadako vs. Kayako may be supernatural killers, but on the Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival red carpet, their hearts melted from the cartoons I drew of them.

Mathieu Denis and Simon Lavoie won the Canada Goose Award for Best Canadian Feature at TIFF for their movie Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves (Ceux qui font les révolutions à moitié n’ont fait que se creuser un tombeau). But can they recite the title of their own movie?

Teagan Vincze may have starred in horror film The ScareHouse and cop shows Murdoch Mysteries and Rookie Blue. But her greatest thrill was clearly to be interviewed by me.
